New Farmers 2019/2020: Transhumance cheese from Campo Imperatore
New Farmers: the CAP and the challanges of European Agriculture. 2019/2020
There are food products which have a tight bond with the territory they come from, like
Canestrato cheese from Castel del Monte in Abruzzo: it is the pecorino cheese of
transhumance. On the Aquila side of the Gran Sasso mountain range, an area which traditionally has a vocation for sheep farming, we meet Giulio Petronio, a sheep farmer and producer of this ancient cheese. Today he breeds about 2300 sheep with the help of his son Claudio. His company completes its chain with the production of Canestrato di Castel del Monte cheese, the marketing of IGP lamb from Central Italy and by taking forward a project for the enhancement of wool production.
